Long Live the BreadBoard, Your Gift to You & Your Community August 13, 2013 Matt Salis - Owner, Great Harvest Bread Co. of Denver
It is the single most important piece of the puzzle that is the Great Harvest Bread Co. of Denver. It sits prominently in the front and center, and it is our hope that it is the first thing you see when you step through our door. It takes center stage in what is sometimes a three ring bread and sandwich circus. It is the undisputed star of our little show. It has grown to its place of prominence from a useful though lack luster start as a large butcher-block-like surface atop four steel legs. It is as important to us as the royals are to the Continue Reading... |

The scene repeats itself daily in our bakery. A smart, healthy looking woman in her 30’s or 40’s dressed in exercise gear and still sweating from a vigorous workout steps up to our cash register and politely asks for a couple of loaves of Honey Whole Wheat. All outward appearances point to her education in general, and now by ordering our top selling 100% whole grain bread with only five ingredients (wheat, honey, yeast, water and salt), she confirms her intelligence at least in the area of nutrition. She has ordered a product that provides |
Bread Quality: If it was easy, everyone would do it. September 12, 2013 Matt Salis - Owner, Great Harvest Bread Co. of Denver
Our three-year-old, Andrew, loves big machines. We cannot walk past a construction site in our neighborhood without stopping to gawk at the cement mixer or backhoe. Cranes working on downtown skyscraper projects are amazing to Andrew, farm equipment working in the fields along the highway always catch his eye and fire trucks with lights and sirens blazing throw him into sensory overload. Every time he comes into the bakery he races over to our giant Hobart mixer to see what is in the bowl. If the mixer is not mixing, he settles for staring |
Who Needs Robin Hood When We Have Each Other? October 17, 2013 Matt Salis - Owner, Great Harvest Bread Co. of Denver
There is a lot of talk these days about wealth redistribution. Even without the noble cause of fighting a tyrannical king there is still a large segment of our population that believes there is justice in taking from the rich and giving to the poor. Equal opportunity no longer seems to be enough for some. Sharing of the wealth without acknowledgement or reward for the hard work and ingenuity it took to earn the wealth is a popular sentiment. As I have shared before, I am a capitalist and thus believe in the free market economy that made |
A Whole Grain Lifestyle Can Be a Real Life Saver November 14, 2013 Matt Salis - Owner, Great Harvest Bread Co. of Denver
Kathleen Hickey’s doctor told her she had mouth cancer in the late 90’s. While treatable, the diagnosis was still terrifying for Kathleen and her husband, Richard. Radiation treatments sent the cancer into remission. It returned in 2001. More terror. More radiation. Once again, medical technology and Kathleen’s strong will to live and thrive beat the cancer into remission. Like a black cloud, however, the possibility of this vicious, relentless killer returning would remain on Kathleen’s and Richard’s minds. |
March 28, 2014 Matt Salis - Owner, Great Harvest Bread Co. of Denver
I am often asked, “What is the best thing about owning the Great Harvest Bread Co. of Denver?” Often the interviewer expects me to say something about being my own boss, thinks I might talk about providing jobs and doing my part in the local economy or hopes I will philosophize about the values of reaping tangible rewards from hard work and persistence. Those things are all pretty cool. But the best part…at the very top of my list of things I love about what we do…is sharing a hot loaf of Honey Whole Wheat right out of the oven. |

Have you ever thought about where your bread comes from? I do not mean what store. I mean the origins of your bread. The ingredients from which it is made tell part of the tale. Bread that claims to be whole grain but has enriched flour at the top of the ingredient list and is followed by lots of long words you cannot pronounce should get your processed junk sensors a tingling. The list of ingredients is only part of the story. Who makes it and how? Just as important…when was it made? “Baked Fresh Daily” often means a pre-formed lump of |
The Customer Always Comes Second January 22, 2015 Matt Salis - Owner, Great Harvest Bread Co. of Denver
At the Great Harvest Bread Co. of Denver, the customer always comes second. That’s right…I said second. I know this is probably blasphemy to the ears of retail gurus and the most successful of business people. We are not only putting something in front of the customers, but actually admitting to it. It is small business customer relations insanity. It is not the first time I have been accused of having a screw or two loose. I am not only admitting that our customers are priority number two, I am even bragging about it. Why am I boastful |
Slice it. Bag it. Feed the Hungry! February 18, 2015 Matt Salis - Owner, Great Harvest Bread Co. of Denver
I am probably supposed to start this message by quoting statistics about the number of homeless people there are living in Denver, or about the overcrowding of shelters and the depletion of inventory in food pantries. That’s how a professional would start a call to action in an attempt to really get your attention. Even the title of this piece is a little mundane. The opening and the title are hardly the kind of shocking introduction to make your eyeballs pop or cause you to gasp in horror. |

On a drive to the airport this morning, my wife and I noticed dozens of dead prairie dogs on the side of Pena Boulevard. For those unfamiliar with the drive to the Denver International Airport, Pena Boulevard is a ten-ish mile highway that brings you from I-70 to the terminal. Besides a couple of hotels and a gas station, Pena Boulevard is, well, prairie for miles in all directions. This explains the prairie dogs. The ridiculous number of them squished next to the highway can only be explained by their lack of knowledge about looking both ways |
Man Can’t Live on Bread Alone...Can He? August 4, 2015 Matt Salis - Owner, Great Harvest Bread Co. of Denver
Man living on bread alone. What a crazy thing to even suggest. It isn’t possible, is it? It can’t be healthy, can it? Well, we are going to find out. For the entire month of August, I am only going to eat our 100% whole grain Great Harvest Bread Co. bread. No meat. No veggies. Not even a drizzle of honey or a schmear of butter. All bread all the time. No salads. No grilled chicken. No western slope peaches. No corn on the cob. No grass fed bison steaks. No tomatoes from our garden. Not even a glass of ice cold milk to wash down my Continue Reading... |
Man CAN Live on Bread Alone...and Thrive! September 7, 2015 Matt Salis - Owner, Great Harvest Bread Co. of Denver
Your blood sugar will spike leading toward diabetes! You won’t get enough protein or vitamins! All those carbs…you are going to gain weight!
These are all things we heard from family, friends and colleagues – including nutrition professionals – when we announced my plan to eat absolutely nothing but our 100% whole grain Great Harvest Bread Co. bread for |

When Oprah Winfrey was on national network television daily, her power to bend the will of the American consumer was unmatched in our culture. I remember the day she told her audience that her favorite bread was nine grain. We sold out of our Nine Grain Crunch by noon everyday for a week. At the peak of her popularity, she did not discuss or influence trends, she single-handedly set trends in many areas of popular culture including food. Her power and influence over the American diet is particularly interesting because her |
Everyday Bread...Baked Extraordinarily May 5, 2016 Matt Salis - Owner, Great Harvest Bread Co. of Denver
Sometimes you have to take a step back in order to move forward. That is exactly what we have done at the Great Harvest Bread Co. of Denver. While other small mom-and-pop bread businesses have made drastic changes following the whims of the consumer, we have remained stubbornly true to who we are even taking a page from our history to cling to our mission. How many other small independently owned whole grain bread bakeries are there in town? How many do you know? The movie Tommy Boy starring Chris Farley (who my Continue Reading... |

Big Changes to Our Business Hours – A Quality Decision June 21, 2016 Matt Salis - Owner, Great Harvest Bread Co. of Denver

NBC’s Today Show Highlights Great Harvest Fresh Process July 19, 2016 Matt Salis - Owner, Great Harvest Bread Co. of Denver
At the Great Harvest Bread Co. of Denver, we have been fresh milling the world’s best 100% whole grain wheat from the Golden Triangle of Montana and baking it into 100% whole grain bread for 30 years. Last week, the Today Show on NBC highlighted this process and explained both the health and flavor benefits. They might think this is something new. For us and our loyal customers, it is something we have been doing for the past three decades to provide thousands of Denver health conscious consumers with their daily bread! |
Raising Dough for a DPS Family Struck with Tragedy October 4, 2016 Matt Salis - Owner, Great Harvest Bread Co. of Denver
We all face challenges that we must struggle to overcome. In the whole grain bread bakery business, the challenges can be anything from a broken wheat grinding mill to misinformed consumers. As a parent of four, I also struggle to help my kids face their challenges. Sometimes it feels like I am always fighting the uphill battle. Then I hear a story like the one of a Denver Public Schools family of four, and my little challenges are yanked into perspective. In comparison, I have never struggled a day in my blessed life. |
Raising Dough for a DPS Family Fleeing Gun Violence October 16, 2017 Matt Salis - Owner, Great Harvest Bread Co. of Denver
We slather sunscreen on our kids and make them wear helmets when they ride their bikes. We limit their screen time, make sure they get exercise and feed them a balanced diet. We monitor what they read and watch, and we try to set good examples for them to follow. Children are very impressionable. The things they see and do when they are young will leave lasting impressions and help set the course for their futures.
